Reverse Osmosis System Slow? Check the Tank Before the Membrane

A reverse osmosis faucet that used to fill a glass in ten seconds now takes a minute and quits halfway. The owner opens a search, reads that the membrane has failed, and buys a membrane. The flow comes back for a day and then goes right back to a trickle.

The membrane was rarely the problem. A reverse osmosis system stores its water in a pressurized tank, and that tank has a rubber bladder with an air charge behind it. The air leaks out over years. When the charge drops, the tank fills with water and has nothing left to push it back out with.

A tank pressure check costs nothing and takes five minutes. Run it first.

How the tank actually delivers water

An RO membrane produces water slowly by design. A 75 gallon per day membrane makes roughly three gallons an hour under good pressure, which is nowhere near fast enough to fill a glass on demand.

The storage tank solves that. It collects the slow output over hours and holds it under pressure. When the faucet opens, compressed air behind the bladder pushes the stored water out at a usable rate.

The air charge is the entire delivery mechanism. A tank with no air charge is a bucket with a lid on it. Water goes in and refuses to come back out with any force.

Why owners blame the membrane

Slow flow at the faucet feels like a production problem. A spent membrane does slow production, so the diagnosis sounds right.

The symptoms split apart under one test. A tank problem gives strong flow for two or three seconds and then a fast fade to a dribble. A membrane problem gives weak flow that stays weak and never had a strong opening burst.

The empty-tank pressure test

Target pressure with the tank fully drained is 7 PSI. That number only means anything on an empty tank, and this is where most people get the reading wrong.

  1. Close the tank valve on the line running from the tank to the system.
  2. Open the RO faucet and leave it open until the water stops completely. This can take several minutes. Every drop has to leave the tank.
  3. Find the Schrader valve on the tank, usually under a blue or black plastic cap near the bottom edge. It looks like a tire valve because it is one.
  4. Put a low-range tire gauge on the valve and read the pressure. A standard 0 to 60 PSI gauge works.
  5. Add air with a hand pump or a bike pump until the gauge reads 7 PSI. Add it in short bursts and check often.
  6. Reopen the tank valve and let the system refill for two to four hours before testing the faucet.

Use a hand pump for this. A compressor delivers far too much air far too fast, and over-pressurizing a bladder tank shortens its life.

Check the manufacturer sticker on the tank before adding air. If it names a different empty pressure, that number wins.

Reading the result

The gauge answers the question in one number.

Water coming out of the Schrader valve is the one result that ends the repair. A ruptured bladder lets water into the air side of the tank, and no amount of pumping fixes it.

An over-charged tank surprises people. Too much air leaves less room for water, so the tank holds a smaller volume and runs dry faster.

Why 7 PSI matters this much

Tank capacity moves with pressure in a way the label never shows. Look at the published capacity curve for a 3.2 gallon tank.

A tank rated at 3.2 gallons holds about 1.26 gallons at 15 PSIG of line pressure. The rating names the shell volume. The delivered volume depends on what the air charge and the house pressure are doing together.

Drop the empty-tank charge toward zero and the useful volume follows it down. That is the whole reason a five-minute check with a tire gauge outperforms a new membrane.

Signs the tank needs replacing

Four findings end the tank's service life. Water out of the Schrader valve means a ruptured bladder. Air that will not hold for a week after a top-up means a leaking valve core or a pinholed shell. Visible rust around the base means the steel is going. A tank refilled to spec that still empties in two glasses has lost its usable volume for good.

When the membrane is the problem

A correct tank charge and a slow faucet together point at production. Four signs confirm it.

  • Water quality has changed. A TDS meter reading the product water at more than about 10 percent of the tap reading says the membrane is passing what it used to reject.
  • The system never stops draining. A membrane that cannot build back pressure keeps the drain line running long past a normal fill cycle.
  • The membrane is past three years old and nobody has changed the prefilters on schedule.
  • Chlorinated tap water has been reaching it. Residual chlorine destroys a thin film composite membrane, which is why a carbon prefilter sits ahead of it.

That last point deserves a paragraph. A carbon and sediment prefilter protects the membrane from chlorine and grit, and skipping those cheap cartridges is what kills expensive membranes early. Owners who replace a membrane without replacing the prefilters usually repeat the purchase inside a year.

The order to work through

Work the checks cheapest first and the fault usually surfaces before any money moves.

  1. Confirm the tank valve and the faucet are fully open.
  2. Drain the tank and read the empty pressure. Set it to 7 PSI.
  3. Refill for two to four hours and retest the faucet.
  4. Replace the prefilters if they are older than six months.
  5. Check house line pressure. A thin film composite membrane wants at least 40 PSI of feed pressure to work properly.
  6. Test the product water with a TDS meter and compare it against the tap.
  7. Replace the membrane once the steps above come back clean.

What pressure should an RO tank hold?

Set it to 7 PSI with the tank completely drained. A reading taken on a partly full tank is meaningless, because the water inside is holding the gauge up.

How often does a tank need air added?

Check it once a year. A healthy tank holds its charge for years. A tank that needs air every few months has a leak somewhere.

Can a bike pump be used?

Yes. A hand pump with a low-range gauge is the right tool for a 7 PSI target. Skip the compressor.
