Whirlpool 4396701 Water Filter Replacement With EDR6D1

Whirlpool 4396701 is EveryDrop Filter 6, and the part number on the box today is EDR6D1. We stock the genuine EveryDrop EDR6D1 Whirlpool Filter 6 cartridge in packs of 1, 2, 3 and 6, and each pack has the same cartridge inside.

Your old cartridge may show 4396701 while the new box shows EDR6D1, and the two numbers can look like two different parts. You can confirm the match in about two minutes with the old cartridge in your hand.

For the same slot we also stock the Gold Series GS-W3, a compatible cartridge. You get fast shipping from our store on either one.

One cartridge with several part numbers

The EDR6D1 goes by more than ten part numbers, and the label on your old cartridge may show any one of them. Find the number from your label in the left column.

Number on your old cartridge What that number is
4396701 Whirlpool part number
4396702, 4396703 or 4396706 Whirlpool number in the same family
Filter 6 EveryDrop filter name
EDR6D1 EveryDrop part number on the box today
L200V or NL120V Cartridge number for a filter system
WF-L200V or WF-NL120V Model number of the filter system
46-9915, 469915 or 9915 Kenmore number

A match on any row means the EDR6D1 is your replacement filter.

Kenmore owners can use the same table, because the Kenmore 46-9915 is this same cartridge. A Kenmore label may show the number with a dash as 46-9915, or with no dash as 469915. The short form 9915 points to the same cartridge. Match the digits and skip the dash.

The label on your old cartridge overrules any table in this post, because that cartridge came out of your own refrigerator. When your label shows a number that is missing from the table, our filter experts can look it up with you at 855-789-FAST.

How to confirm the Whirlpool 4396701 fits your refrigerator

Start with the label on the old cartridge. It gives you the fastest answer. Look for 4396701, Filter 6, EDR6D1, L200V or NL120V on that label. Any one of them points to the EDR6D1. Take a photo of the label with your phone, and you still have the number after the old cartridge goes in the trash.

Next, check the brand on the refrigerator door. We list the EDR6D1 as "Certified to fit these leading refrigerator brands: Whirlpool, MAYTAG, KitchenAid, JENN-AIR, and Amana." A top freezer refrigerator with one of those five brands on the door passes the second check.

For any doubt that remains, search the Compatible Models tab on the EDR6D1 product page for the model number of your refrigerator. The tab lists 412 Kenmore, 212 Whirlpool, 112 KitchenAid, 9 Jenn-Air and 8 Fisher & Paykel entries. The brand list leaves out Kenmore and Fisher & Paykel. Owners of those two brands go straight to the tab and search for their model number.

Copy your model number letter for letter before you search, because the entries on the tab are long model numbers. Two of the Whirlpool entries are ET1FHTXMB and 7GR2SHWXRL00. Check a zero against the letter O and the number 1 against the letter I, because those pairs look alike in print. One wrong letter can send you to the wrong row. If your model number is missing from the tab, call us with that number in hand before you order.

Which refrigerators use the Filter 6 cartridge

This cartridge goes in a top freezer refrigerator, and the filter compartment is in the bottom left corner of the refrigerator. When the label on your old cartridge is worn, check that your refrigerator has a top freezer and a filter compartment in that corner. Then search the Compatible Models tab for your model number, because a match on the tab confirms the EDR6D1 when you cannot read the label.

The same cartridge also fits two filter systems. We list it as a "Replacement Cartridge NL120V OR L200V for System Models WF-NL120V & WF-L200V." A number with WF in front is the model number of a filter system. Without the WF, the same number belongs to the cartridge. When you know your system is a WF-L200V or a WF-NL120V, the EDR6D1 is its replacement cartridge. The capacity of the cartridge depends on which of the two systems you have.

If you own a side by side or a bottom freezer refrigerator, check the label on its old cartridge in the same way. When that label shows a number outside our table, look in our Whirlpool refrigerator water filters collection. It shows the Whirlpool refrigerator cartridges we stock, and you can match your number there.

How long the EDR6D1 lasts and when to change it

The cartridge has a capacity of 200 gallons (757 liters) on the WF-L200V system, which has an indicator. The WF-NL120V system has no indicator. On that system the cartridge has a capacity of 120 gallons (454 liters).

Our EDR6D1 page says "Replace filter every 6 months or 120 gallons to maximize contaminant reduction." Plan your change by that schedule, at six months or 120 gallons, whichever comes first. A busy kitchen can reach 120 gallons before the six month date.

The flow rate is 0.5 gallons per minute (1.9 liters per minute). On the EDR6D1 product page, we describe the cartridge as "a mechanical and chemical reduction filter." The same page lists NSF certification for the filter. It also lists lead and mercury among the contaminants the filter reduces.

Write the install date on each new cartridge when you put it in. That date is your reminder on the WF-NL120V system, because that system has no indicator. Mark it on the WF-L200V as well, because the six month change applies on both systems. Add EDR6D1 next to the date, and you can read the part number at the next change even if the label wears. Our post on how often to replace a refrigerator water filter explains the six month rule and when to break it.

The Gold Series GS-W3 fits the same slot

The Gold Series GS-W3 refrigerator replacement filter is compatible with Whirlpool Filter 6. We offer it as the alternate cartridge for the same slot. We stock the GS-W3 in packs of one to three cartridges.

Use the same label check before you order the GS-W3, because it fits the refrigerators that take Filter 6. Pick the EDR6D1 when you want the genuine EveryDrop part. The GS-W3 is the compatible choice. Order either cartridge from its own product page.

Match the part and pick your pack

  1. Read the label on the old cartridge.
  2. Find that number in the table above.
  3. Check the brand on your refrigerator door against the five brands we list.
  4. Search the Compatible Models tab for your model number when your brand is missing from that list.
  5. Pick the pack that covers the months ahead.
  6. Order the EDR6D1 or the GS-W3 from its product page.

At one change every six months, a 2 pack of the EDR6D1 covers a year and a 3 pack covers 18 months. The 6 pack covers three years of changes from one order. The GS-W3 2 pack and 3 pack cover the same months.

A home with two refrigerators that both take Filter 6 can share one pack. Check the old label in each refrigerator first. A 2 pack then covers one change in each refrigerator. With an EDR6D1 6 pack, both refrigerators get a year and a half of changes from one order.

A single cartridge suits a first order, because you can confirm the fit in your own refrigerator before you buy more. A spare cartridge on the shelf lets you make the change on the day it comes due. Choose your pack size on the EDR6D1 page before you add it to your cart.
