Kenmore 9890 Water Filter GEN11042FR-08 Fit and Replacement

GEN11042FR-08 is the Kenmore 9890 water filter, and we sell it as the Kenmore 46-9890 / GEN11042FR-08 water filter. This cartridge is an exact replacement for the LG LT500P, and either one twists into the same filter head.

You can confirm the fit in about two minutes with the old cartridge in your hand and a tape measure beside you. Once the fit checks out, the swap itself is six short steps at the filter head.

GEN11042FR-08 and the other part numbers on the old cartridge

Six part numbers lead to this one fit, and the label on your old cartridge may show any of them. Four of the six are Kenmore numbers, and the other two belong to the LG LT500P.

Number on the label What the number is Where we sell the fit
9890 The Kenmore part number for this cartridge Kenmore 9890 page
46-9890 The same Kenmore number with 46 in front of it Kenmore 9890 page
469890 The 46-9890 number with no hyphen Kenmore 9890 page
GEN11042FR-08 A second Kenmore part number for the same cartridge Kenmore 9890 page
LT500P The LG part number for the same fit, on the genuine LG cartridge LG LT500P page
5231JA2002A A second LG number for the LT500P LG LT500P page

When you open our Kenmore 9890 product page, the product title shows 46-9890 and GEN11042FR-08 side by side, with LG LT500P Replacement at the end. With those numbers in the title, you can match the page to your label at a glance.

Two other numbers look close to these and belong to a different cartridge, the LG LT800P. Check the Kenmore number on your label with care, because only one digit separates 46-9490 from 46-9890.

If your label shows LT800P or 46-9490, your refrigerator takes the LG LT800P. If it shows ADQ73613401, the LT800P is your part as well. Our guide to the LG LT800P water filter covers that cartridge and the part numbers that go with it.

Check the label first, and then check the size

Start with the label, because the part number on the old cartridge settles the fit before you order. The label on your old cartridge overrules any table on this page. When the label and this page disagree, order by the label, or call us and we will find the match with you.

The second check takes a tape measure. Our GEN11042FR-08 cartridge is white and measures 5 1/2 inches long by 3 1/2 inches in diameter. Measure the old cartridge from one end to the other for the length. Then measure straight across the cartridge for the diameter.

When the label and both measurements match, you have found your part. If one measurement comes out different, read the label again before you place the order.

If the print on the label has worn away, the model number of your refrigerator gives you a second way to confirm the fit. Measure the old cartridge in that case too, because the size check still works when the print is gone.

Which Kenmore refrigerators take the 9890 water filter

The Compatible Models tab on our Kenmore 9890 product page lists 99 Kenmore model numbers for this cartridge. The tab is on the same page where you place the order, and you can confirm the fit and order in one visit.

Short entries on the list include 51012, 51013, 51014, 51016, 51019 and 51022. The list also has longer model numbers, such as 795.31002700. Copy every digit and the dot when you write your own model number down. The long entries 79551012010 and 79551013010 differ by a single digit. Compare your model number with the list one digit at a time, because it is easy to misread a near match as your own.

Find the model number of your refrigerator first, because the tab lists refrigerator models. Then look for that number in the tab. The part number on the old cartridge is a separate number, and it belongs to the label check.

If your model is missing from the tab, look through our Kenmore refrigerator water filters for the other Kenmore cartridges we carry. You can also call 855-789-FAST with your model number, and our filter experts will help you find the match.

What the Kenmore 9890 cartridge filters and how long it lasts

The Kenmore 9890 is a carbon block cartridge. NSF International tested and certified it against ANSI/NSF Standard 42 for a 92 percent reduction of chlorine and a 96 percent reduction of Class III particulates. The cartridge does not remove fluoride. The Contaminants tab on our Kenmore 9890 product page shows the full certification details.

Each cartridge lasts 6 months or 500 gallons, whichever comes first. Water flows through it at 0.5 gallons per minute. The cartridge works at water pressures from 20 to 125 psi and at water temperatures from 34 to 100 degrees F.

We recommend a new cartridge every 6 months. Spread over 6 months, 500 gallons comes to about 2.7 gallons a day. A home that draws more filtered water than that reaches 500 gallons first, and that day becomes your change date.

Write the change date on your calendar when the new cartridge goes in. Order the next cartridge on the day you write that date down, and it will be on hand when the date comes.

Take out the old cartridge and lock in the new one

You change this cartridge at the filter head. Take the new cartridge out of its box before you start. Keep it within reach, because it goes into the filter head right after the old one comes out. Before you discard the old cartridge, take a photo of its label with your phone. That photo gives you the part number for the next order in 6 months.

Follow these six steps in order:

  1. Turn the old cartridge gently to the left about a quarter turn, until it releases from the filter head.
  2. Pull the old cartridge straight down and out of the filter head.
  3. Discard the old cartridge.
  4. Line up the new cartridge in the filter head.
  5. Turn the new cartridge to the right until it stops and locks into place.
  6. Press and hold the reset button for 3 seconds if your refrigerator has a change filter light.

For more help with that light, read our guide on how to reset the water filter light. If your refrigerator has no change filter light, skip the reset. Your calendar then gives you the reminder for the next change.

If the old cartridge does not release after a quarter turn, call 855-789-FAST before you force it. Our filter experts will help you work out the next step.

Choose the Kenmore box or the LG box

You can order the Kenmore 9890 or the LG LT500P, and you follow the same six steps for either one. Pick the Kenmore 9890 when you want the same Kenmore number that your old label shows. Pick the LT500P when you want the LG name on the box, because the LT500P is LG's own part.

We sell the Kenmore 9890 in a 1 pack and a 2 pack on our Kenmore 9890 product page. We sell the genuine LG LT500P in packs of 1, 2, 3 and 6 on our LG LT500P product page. Each page shows the live price, and you choose the box and the pack size that suit you.

A 2 pack gives you a year of changes at one cartridge every 6 months. The LT500P 3 pack gives you 18 months, and its 6 pack gives you 3 years on the same schedule. Keep each spare cartridge in its box until its change date comes.

Our guide to the LG LT500P water filter covers the same cartridge under its LG numbers. Read it when your old label shows LT500P or 5231JA2002A.

Common questions about the GEN11042FR-08

Is GEN11042FR-08 the same as LT500P?

Yes. A refrigerator that takes the LT500P also takes the GEN11042FR-08, and we stock both cartridges.

How do I change a Kenmore 9890 water filter?

Give the old cartridge about a quarter turn to the left, and it comes free of the filter head. Then lock the new cartridge in with a turn to the right.

How often do I change the Kenmore 9890 filter?

Plan on a new cartridge twice a year, because each one lasts up to 6 months. Change it sooner if 500 gallons pass through it before the 6 months are up.
