Reverse Osmosis Filter Replacement Schedule: Sediment at 6 Months, Carbon at 12, Membrane at 2-4 Years

A reverse osmosis system runs water through several stages, and each stage protects the one behind it. That is why the replacement schedule is a rhythm rather than a single date: pre-filters roughly every 6 to 12 months, the membrane every 2 to 4 years, and the polishing filter once a year. Get the rhythm right and the expensive membrane in the middle lives a long, cheap life. Miss it and the inexpensive pre-filter you skipped takes the membrane down with it. The reverse osmosis filter replacement schedule at a glance

  • Stage 1, sediment pre-filter: every 6 to 12 months. On supply water with visible sediment or well water, lean toward 6.
  • Stage 2 (and 3 on many systems), carbon pre-filter: every 6 to 12 months. Change it with the sediment filter so the schedule stays simple.
  • RO membrane: every 2 to 4 years. The workhorse, and the stage the pre-filters exist to protect.
  • Post-filter (polishing carbon): every 12 months. The final taste pass before the faucet.

Those ranges assume typical municipal water and household use. Well water, heavy sediment, very hard supply, or high daily drinking-water volume all pull the intervals toward the short end. Your system's manual is the tiebreaker; when it names an interval for your exact model, follow it.

Why each stage has its own clock

Sediment pre-filter: the first stage

The first stage catches sand and rust flakes, plus the finer grit riding behind them, before any of it reaches something delicate. It absorbs the most abuse of any cartridge in the system, which is exactly the design. When it clogs, water pressure through the whole system drops, production slows, and fine particles start slipping downstream toward the membrane. Where do you find your cartridge models? On the cartridge labels themselves, in the manual, or on the system's spec sticker, usually inside the housing cabinet.

Carbon pre-filter: where chlorine stops

Chlorine damages the thin-film membranes most residential RO systems use, and this stage removes it. The carbon block strips chlorine (and improves taste along the way) before water touches the membrane. A spent carbon pre-filter does not announce itself; the water keeps flowing while chlorine quietly shortens the membrane's life. That is why this one gets changed on the calendar even when everything seems fine. One hedge worth knowing: a few systems run chlorine-tolerant membranes or extra post-stages such as remineralizers, and those carry their own intervals, so let your manual overrule any general schedule.

The membrane: the expensive one you are protecting

The semipermeable membrane does the actual reverse osmosis. Protected by fresh pre-filters, it runs 2 to 4 years. A full pre-filter set typically runs $30 to $60, while a replacement membrane often runs $50 to $90 and takes more work to swap. The signs a membrane is fading: noticeably slower fill at the faucet, a storage tank that never seems full, or rising readings if you test with a TDS meter. Post-filter: last stop before the faucet

Water can sit in the storage tank between uses, so the final carbon stage gives it one last polish on the way to the faucet. Annual replacement keeps that final glass tasting the way an RO system should.

The change order (and the flush that follows)

Most pre-filter changes take 15 to 20 minutes and need no tools beyond the housing wrench that came with the system.

  1. Shut off the feed valve to the system and close the tank valve. Open the RO faucet to relieve pressure.
  2. Change pre-filters first (sediment, then carbon), always in their correct housings. Swapping stage positions puts the wrong filter in the wrong job.
  3. Change the membrane only in its scheduled year; it has its own housing and usually its own service interval.
  4. Change the post-filter last, so the freshly filtered line ends on fresh carbon.
  5. Reopen the valves and flush. Let the tank fill and drain through the faucet at least once (a full fill-and-empty cycle) before drinking; after a membrane change, give it a couple of cycles. New carbon can shed harmless fines at first, and the flush clears them.
  6. Date every cartridge. A marker line on each housing or a note on your phone turns next year's guesswork into a two-second check.

Match the parts to your exact system

RO cartridges are not universal. Housings differ by brand and model, and running an off-spec cartridge undermines the whole chain. Pull the part numbers from your current cartridges or your manual, and buy stages as a set when you can; matched sets keep the 6-to-12-month stages aligned on one calendar date. Frequently asked questions

What happens if I skip a pre-filter change?

Pressure and production drop first, then the damage moves downstream: sediment loads the carbon stage, chlorine reaches the membrane, and the membrane's 2-to-4-year life gets shorter. The cheapest cartridges in the system exist to protect the most expensive one.

How do I know when the membrane is done?

Slow faucet flow that a pre-filter change does not fix, a tank that will not fill, or rising TDS readings if you test. If the membrane is 3 or more years old and any of those show up, it is time.

Can I change just one stage?

You can, but the pre-filters age together, so changing sediment and carbon as a pair keeps protection even and the schedule simple. The membrane and post-filter run on their own clocks.

Do I need to sanitize the system?

Most manufacturers recommend sanitizing the system (housings and tank) about once a year, typically during the pre-filter change. Your manual's procedure is the one to follow.

Why does my water taste off even though the membrane is newer?

Check the post-filter first; it is the last carbon the water touches and an easy one to forget. If it is over a year old, start there before blaming the membrane.
