A reverse osmosis system runs water through several stages, and each stage protects the one behind it. That is why the replacement schedule is a rhythm rather than a single date: pre-filters roughly every 6 to 12 months, the membrane every 2 to 4 years, and the polishing filter once a year. Get the rhythm right and the expensive membrane in the middle lives a long, cheap life. Miss it and the inexpensive pre-filter you skipped takes the membrane down with it. Those ranges assume typical municipal water and household use. Well water, heavy sediment, very hard supply, or high daily drinking-water volume all pull the intervals toward the short end. Your system's manual is the tiebreaker; when it names an interval for your exact model, follow it. The first stage catches sand and rust flakes, plus the finer grit riding behind them, before any of it reaches something delicate. It absorbs the most abuse of any cartridge in the system, which is exactly the design. When it clogs, water pressure through the whole system drops, production slows, and fine particles start slipping downstream toward the membrane. Where do you find your cartridge models? On the cartridge labels themselves, in the manual, or on the system's spec sticker, usually inside the housing cabinet. Chlorine damages the thin-film membranes most residential RO systems use, and this stage removes it. The carbon block strips chlorine (and improves taste along the way) before water touches the membrane. A spent carbon pre-filter does not announce itself; the water keeps flowing while chlorine quietly shortens the membrane's life. That is why this one gets changed on the calendar even when everything seems fine. One hedge worth knowing: a few systems run chlorine-tolerant membranes or extra post-stages such as remineralizers, and those carry their own intervals, so let your manual overrule any general schedule. The semipermeable membrane does the actual reverse osmosis. Protected by fresh pre-filters, it runs 2 to 4 years. A full pre-filter set typically runs $30 to $60, while a replacement membrane often runs $50 to $90 and takes more work to swap. The signs a membrane is fading: noticeably slower fill at the faucet, a storage tank that never seems full, or rising readings if you test with a TDS meter. Annual replacement keeps that final glass tasting the way an RO system should. Most pre-filter changes take 15 to 20 minutes and need no tools beyond the housing wrench that came with the system. RO cartridges are not universal. Housings differ by brand and model, and running an off-spec cartridge undermines the whole chain. The cheapest cartridges in the system exist to protect the most expensive one. Slow faucet flow that a pre-filter change does not fix, a tank that will not fill, or rising TDS readings if you test. If the membrane is 3 or more years old and any of those show up, it is time. You can, but the pre-filters age together, so changing sediment and carbon as a pair keeps protection even and the schedule simple. The membrane and post-filter run on their own clocks. Most manufacturers recommend sanitizing the system (housings and tank) about once a year, typically during the pre-filter change. Your manual's procedure is the one to follow. Check the post-filter first; it is the last carbon the water touches and an easy one to forget. If it is over a year old, start there before blaming the membrane.
